Stoicism- the philosophy of the Stoics who believed that people that people should not try to feel joy or sadness 3. Circumference- the outer border of a circle, the measurement of that border 4. Plane Geometry- a branch of mathematics centered around measurement and relationships of points, lines, angles , and surfaces of figures on a plane 5. Entrepreneurship- the act of running a business and taking on the risks of that business. 3. Supply- the amount of a good or service a producer wants to sell. 4. Demand- the amount of a good or service a consumer wants to buy. 5. Scarcity- the of a resource. 6. Opportunity Cost- what is given up, such as time or money, to make or buy something. 7. Traditional Economy- an economic system in which custom decides what people do, make, buy, and sell. 8. Command Economy- an economic system in which the government decides what goods will be made and who will receive them. 9. Recession- a period of slow economic growth or decline. 10. Inflation- a continued rise in prices or the supply of money. 11. Export- a good sent from country to another in trade. 12. Expert- a skilled person who has mastered a subject Chapter 2, Lesson 1 CONTENT Vocabulary- Studying Geography 1. hemisphere- a "half-sphere," used to refer to one-half of the globe when divided into North and South or East and West. 2. latitude- imaginary lines that circle the Earth parallel to the equator 3. longitude- imaginary lines that circle the Earth from Pole to Pole, measuring distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. 4. projection- a way of showing the round Earth on a flat map. 5. physical map- a map that shows land and water features 6. political map-a map that shows the names and borders of countries 7. special-purpose map- a map that shows themes or patterns such as climate, natural resources, or population. 8. scale- a measuring line that shows the distances on a map. 9. cardinal directions- north, south, east and west 10. choropleth- a special-purpose map that uses color to show population density. 11. migration- the movement of people from one place to settle in another place. 12. culture- the set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by a group of people.
